The right sippy cup for baby?
- The position for swallowing: to drink, our little heart will lean its head backwards and therefore position itself in hyper extension. So what? Well, this position does not facilitate swallowing and can increase the risk of a false start.
- The position of the lips: it is very difficult to swallow with the mouth open. However, the cup with a spout causes the mouth to open without closing at the moment of swallowing.
- Increased salivary loss: as you have understood, there is no active work on lip closure, which is important especially for all the extraordinary children (I am thinking of children with Down's syndrome, with multiple disabilities or with autism) who tend to have salivary leaks. It is therefore very important to set up another means of drinking liquids.
- Acquisition of mature swallowing: when a child uses the sippy cup, the tongue will make antero-posterior movements to swallow, i.e. the tongue will push the teeth to swallow.
This mechanism, if repeated, can lead to orthodontic problems and difficulties in switching to secondary swallowing, i.e. the apex (the tip of the tongue) rises to swallow.
But what can be proposed, what are the alternatives?
